The haze has lifted, and the truth about cannabis has finally come to light. What was once considered a party drug is now being hailed as a miracle ingredient with hundreds of uses in food, clothing and medicine. But why has cannabis sparked our interest at Rocky Mountain Soap Company? We want to share why we can’t stop getting high on hydration and how we have been using hemp in the kitchen.
When people think of cannabis, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Weed? Dazed and Confused? For, many this is what cannabis means, however, there is a distinct difference between the marijuana and hemp. For years, the main focus on cannabis has been on tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the intoxicating component, but as cannabis became more mainstream, (and now officially legal in Canada) science has been able to focus its research on more than the intoxicating elements of the plant. This is where cannabidiol (CBD) has its opportunity to shine.
CBD doesn’t have any intoxicating elements and has taken the beauty industry by storm, due in large part to its anti-oxidizing properties. This means it’s dope at fighting signs of aging. According to the author of the book, CBD Oil: Everyday secrets, hemp oil is packed with Vitamin E, making it effective at calming inflammation which is the main culprit in acne, eczema, and psoriasis. One of the best parts about hemp oil is that it won’t penetrate the top several layers of skin, meaning it keeps the nutrients focused where you want it most, your skin, and out of your bloodstream.
Hemp isn’t just good for your skin, by eating hemp seeds, you can get some of that goodness inside, too! Hemp seeds are packed full of essential fatty acids such as omega-3 and omega-6. Seeds can be locally sourced right here in Canada and contain as much protein as chia or flax seed! Sustainable, healthy and delicious, our favourite things! All this talk about nutrients and protein gave us the munchies, so, we got creative in the kitchen. Check out our fall seed clusters and a very berry smoothie bowl and get inspired to cook with hemp.
The hemp we use is sourced from farmers in Manitoba and hand picked by our procurement team, making it a sustainable and eco-friendly ingredient. So far, hemp can be found in our Patchouli Soap, but our product development team is always looking for new ideas. We love to get creative, especially with healthy ingredients and we want your help brainstorming. What products would you be excited to see hemp oil in? Are you currently using products made with hemp in your beauty routine? Leave your suggestions and beauty stories in the comments below!
